1. History
Taxila Museum Was built to display and protect the ancient artifacts found during excavation in Taxila historical city once part of the Gandhara Civilization. The museum Was established between 1911 and 1922 Under the guidance of Sir John Marshall famous British archaeologist.
Taxila was an important center for Buddhism education and art and was influence by Greek Persian and Indian cultures. The museum mainly show cases finding from the surrounding ruin including Dharmarajika Jaulian & Mohra Moradu which are all ancient Buddhist site.
2. Facade and Architecture
The museum building itself has a British colonial design made from stone and red brick. It has a large entrance arched doorways and a well kept garden at the front The surroundings are peaceful giving visitors calm environment to enjoy history.
3. Interior Atmosphere
Inside the museum the rooms are divided by time period and archaeological sites. The display cases are well lit and the temperature is controll to preserve the artifact The interior is simple but effective focusing the attention on the priceless items on display.
SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MUSEUM INCLUDE
Ancient Stone Relief with Fragmented Statues
I saw a large stone relief featuring several broken statues. In the center was a headless figure in classical robe and around it were Smaller statues missing heads or arms. These were from Greco Buddhist or Gandharan art showing a mix of Greek and South Asian styles. It was amazing to see how such art survived for thousand of years even in damaged form.
Multi tiered Stone Stupa
Another fascinating object was a multi tiered stone stupa carve beautifuly from stone It had circular layer stack on top of Each other & Was likely use in religiou ritual It symbolize enlightenment & is a key element of Buddhist architecture.
Buddha Head from Jaulian (2nd–3rd Century A.D.)
I was especially impressed by the sculpted Buddha head from Jaulian dating back to the 2nd 3rd century A.D. The features were so delicate curly hair peaceful expression and the urna on the forehead. It clearly show the beauty of Gandhara art.
Seated Buddha Sculpture
There was also a seated Buddha in meditation posture (Dhyana Mudra) with a halo behind his head and two attendants standing on the side. This too was carved in the Gandhara style blending Roman & Buddhist elements.
4. My Experience
This visit was arranged by my college as part of an educational tour. At that time I had little knowledge about history but the Museum opened my eyes to the rich culture of our ancestors. I spent hours looking at the artifact reading descriptions and imagining how people lived back then.
I was amazed by how well everything was preserved and labeled. The museum staff was helpful & guided us throughout. I would definitely love to visit again this time with a deeper understanding of Buddhist art and the Gandhara periods.
5. Exhibition Theme
The museum does not hold temporary exhibition but the main theme of the collection is the Buddhist and Gandhara civilization including artifact jewelry tools sculptures coins & architectural pieces from various archaeological site.
