Their appearance is not due to pigmentation alone but rather structural coloration—microscopic surface structures that reflect light in specific ways, similar to how a peacock’s feathers or butterfly wings shimmer.
Jewel bugs are shield-shaped, and their scutellum—a large triangular plate on their backs—often covers their entire abdomen and wings, giving them a smooth, beetle-like look. They range in size from 5 to 20 millimeters, depending on the species.
