La falsa ortica macchiata, conosciuta scientificamente come Lamium maculatum, è una pianta erbacea perenne appartenente alla famiglia delle Lamiaceae. Originaria dell’Europa e dell’Asia occidentale, è molto apprezzata come pianta ornamentale da ombra, grazie alla sua capacità di coprire il terreno rapidamente.

Si presenta con un portamento tappezzante, formando cuscini bassi e densi che non superano solitamente i 20-30 cm di altezza. Le foglie, disposte in modo opposto lungo i fusti quadrangolari, sono di colore verde scuro con caratteristiche macchie o striature nella parte centrale. Hanno margini dentellati e una forma ovata, e ricordano quelle dell’ortica, da cui deriva il nome comune, anche se, a differenza dell’ortica vera, non sono urticanti.

Durante la primavera e l’estate, Lamium maculatum produce piccoli fiori labiati riuniti in verticilli all’ascella delle foglie. I fiori possono essere di colore rosa, lilla, porpora o bianco, a seconda della varietà. La fioritura è gradita a insetti impollinatori come api e bombi.

Dal punto di vista della coltivazione, la falsa ortica macchiata è una pianta rustica e molto facile da mantenere. Predilige ambienti ombreggiati o di mezz’ombra, dove altre piante faticano a crescere, ed è ideale per sottochioma, bordure ombreggiate o giardini rocciosi. Si adatta bene a diversi tipi di terreno, purché ben drenati, e resiste sia al freddo che alla siccità una volta ben radicata. Non richiede cure particolari, ma può essere potata leggermente dopo la fioritura per stimolare una crescita più compatta.

Spotted dead-nettle, scientifically known as Lamium maculatum, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Native to Europe and Western Asia, it is highly valued as an ornamental shade plant due to its ability to quickly cover the ground.

It grows with a creeping, mat-forming habit, creating low, dense cushions that typically do not exceed 20–30 cm in height. The leaves are arranged oppositely along square stems, dark green in color with distinctive central spots or streaks. They have toothed margins and an ovate shape, resembling stinging nettle leaves—hence the common name—although, unlike true nettles, they are not stinging.

In spring and summer, Lamium maculatum produces small lipped flowers arranged in whorls at the leaf axils. The flowers can be pink, lilac, purple, or white, depending on the variety. This flowering is attractive to pollinators such as bees and bumblebees.

From a cultivation standpoint, spotted dead-nettle is a hardy and very low-maintenance plant. It thrives in shaded or partially shaded environments where many other plants struggle to grow, making it ideal for underplanting trees, shaded borders, or rock gardens. It adapts well to various soil types, as long as they are well-drained, and is tolerant of both cold and drought once established. It requires little care, though a light pruning after flowering helps encourage a more compact growth habit.
