L’ananas, conosciuto scientificamente come Ananas comosus, è una pianta erbacea perenne appartenente alla famiglia delle Bromeliaceae. Originaria del Sud America, in particolare delle regioni tropicali del Brasile, del Paraguay e della Bolivia, è oggi coltivata in numerose aree tropicali e subtropicali del mondo per la produzione del suo frutto dolce e succoso, uno dei più apprezzati a livello globale.

La pianta dell’ananas presenta un portamento compatto e rosettiforme, con foglie rigide, allungate e appuntite, spesso dotate di margini spinosi. Le foglie sono disposte a spirale attorno a un fusto centrale molto corto e possono superare il metro di lunghezza. La pianta produce un’infiorescenza terminale composta da decine di piccoli fiori violetti o rossastri, che si saldano tra loro per formare il frutto che conosciamo.

Il frutto dell’ananas non è un vero frutto singolo, ma un’infruttescenza, ovvero l’unione di più frutti fusi insieme attorno a un asse centrale. La sua buccia è ruvida e squamosa, mentre la polpa è gialla, succosa e ricca di zuccheri e vitamine, in particolare vitamina C. Alla sommità del frutto è presente un ciuffo di foglie (detto “corona”), che può essere utilizzato per la propagazione della pianta.

Dal punto di vista della coltivazione, l’ananas richiede un clima caldo e umido, con temperature ideali comprese tra i 20 e i 30 °C. Predilige terreni ben drenati, leggeri e ricchi di materia organica. Non sopporta il freddo né i ristagni d’acqua. Nelle zone temperate può essere coltivato in vaso e spostato all’interno durante i mesi più freddi. La crescita è piuttosto lenta: dalla messa a dimora al raccolto possono passare anche 18-24 mesi.

Una curiosità interessante è che, dopo la fruttificazione, la pianta madre tende a esaurirsi, ma produce polloni laterali che possono essere separati e ripiantati per ottenere nuove piante.

The pineapple, scientifically known as Ananas comosus, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Bromeliaceae family. Native to South America, particularly the tropical regions of Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia, it is now widely cultivated in many tropical and subtropical areas of the world for its sweet and juicy fruit—one of the most appreciated fruits globally.

The pineapple plant has a compact, rosette-like growth habit, with stiff, elongated, pointed leaves that often have spiny edges. The leaves are arranged in a spiral around a very short central stem and can grow over a meter in length. The plant produces a terminal inflorescence made up of dozens of small purple or reddish flowers, which merge together to form the fruit we recognize.

The pineapple fruit is not a true single fruit, but an infructescence—an aggregation of multiple fused fruits around a central axis. Its skin is rough and scaly, while the flesh is yellow, juicy, and rich in sugars and vitamins, especially vitamin C. At the top of the fruit is a tuft of leaves (called a "crown"), which can be used to propagate the plant.

From a cultivation perspective, pineapple requires a warm and humid climate, with ideal temperatures between 20 and 30°C. It prefers well-drained, light, and organic-rich soils. It is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate waterlogging. In temperate regions, it can be grown in pots and moved indoors during colder months. Growth is relatively slow: it can take 18 to 24 months from planting to harvest.

An interesting fact is that after fruiting, the mother plant typically dies back but produces side shoots (called "suckers") that can be separated and replanted to grow new plants.
