I'm talking about the igbo and Yoruba costume. This two tribes are common tribes that we have in Nigeria. They are known for their different attires , I'm wearing an attire representing the Igbo while my daughter presents the Igbo girl child and the Yoruba.

  1. Fashion Fusion
Create a cross-cultural costume concept by mixing traditional elements from two or more cultures. You can illustrate it, wear it, or describe it visually. Explain your creative choices

The pictures here are two different cultures namely the Igbo and Yoruba. The one on the left is the Igbo attire which represents how the Igbos dress during any traditional celebrations. The Igbo are located in the eastern part of Nigeria. Their language is Igbo though within the Igbos there are different tongues but they understands themselves. In the Igbo dressing we have these important things that makes our attire unique they are.

  • The red beads(ana-olu)
  • The wrapper(Akwa)
  • Traditional hand fan (akupe)
  • Beaded headgear( ukpu- isi)

The beads are worn on the neck or waist, it signifies dignity, womanhood and fertility ,the Igbos believes that the beads is connected to spiritual things which scares any form of negativity during the traditional ceremonies.

The wrapper that the Igbos wears during this traditional ceremonies are called George or Isi-agu (lions head) , tying this wrapper shows a significant thing about Igbos and it's compulsory for every woman.

The hand fan( Akupe) . This hand-fan as it's widely known is not just for cooling the body , it signifies royalty, elegance and prestige reflecting the Igbo traditions.

The beaded headgear. Represents royalty while it also what makes the attire complete.

The Igbo are wonderful and hospitable people in the whole Africa , their language, clothing, food differentiate them from other tribes in Nigeria.

simple Yoruba dressing , picture taken in Akwaibom state

We have the Yoruba 's who are located in the south-western part of Nigeria , they are known for their humility and diligence , they have vibrant culture which is rooted in spirituality, their language is very unique among others in Nigeria ,we can't describe the Yoruba's without mentioning their craft like the weaving of the Aso oke , this is a significant attire for the Yoruba's that is worn by both men and women.

The Yoruba most wear a free blouse called buba and it is complimented with wrappers , Aso-Oke, and gele.

More history of the costumes of the Yoruba and the Igbo.

History has it that the Yoruba's are gifted with the production of the Aso oke with stiff fabrics. And this attire made them famous and admirable during occasions. While the Igbos are known for their pattern material designed with lions head this attires has been influenced by Western style where lace or any Nigerian wrapper can be a replacement, the colonialism influenced both the Yourba and the Igbo pattern of dressing.

Hola....

Mucha suerte
