Steem Atlas is a map based interface for the Steem blockchain allowing creators to geographically pin posts about any type of place around the world.

It was inspired by the original Steemit World Map site developed by @martibis around 8 years ago.

However, Steem Atlas has been totally re-engineered using a modern code base and using the Open Street Maps system instead of Google Maps.

The project was launched by the @pennsif.witness team in November 2024 and since then has gathered a considerable following on the platform with almost 4500 posts being added by nearly 400 people.

Steem Atlas is utilising the special features of the Steem blockchain to create a unique dataset of geographically located information that is not available anywhere else on the internet.

The team strongly believes that Steem Atlas has massive potential to attract new people to the platform - new creators, new content consumers and new investors.

So far all the development of Steem Atlas has been covered by our own resources and the earnings from the @pennsif.witness.

Now we are seeking funding support from the Steem DAO to allow us to dedicate more time to take Steem Atlas to the next level.

With the DAO funding Steem Atlas can achieve the credibility and visibility to build a significant presence in the world of geographically located information.

WORKPLAN

We are seeking funding to cover 4 months of development.

The primary goal for this first work phase is to continue the development of Steem Atlas to become totally independent of steemit.com.

This will include…

• The addition of Steem Keychain
• The addition of a sign up mechanism for new users
• The addition of a STEEM wallet
• The addition of voting and commenting.

By the end of this stage Steem Atlas will become a totally self-contained and independent application running on the Steem blockchain but not requiring users, both existing and new, to have to interact with steemit.com (unless they want to).

Alongside this we will also be doing further work to optimise the performance of Steem Altas for mobile usage to ensure even users with low bandwidth can use the site effectively.

During this work phase we are also looking to develop an alternative branding for Steem Atlas. This will allow users to swap between different themes for the site according to their preference.

BUDGET

The @pennsif.witness team, based in the UK, comprises @pennsif as project and community lead, @rexthetech as technical lead and @freelance.monkey as design lead.

Between us we have over 80 years of software development and project management experience.

Currently we work on Steem Atlas as we each have free time from other projects.

With the help of DAO funding we will be able to allocate dedicated time to the project to help it progress much faster.

We will continue underwriting part of the work from witness earnings, but we would like to seek funding for 4.5 days work a week from the DAO.

We are all based in the UK, as is @the-gorilla, so we will use the same daily rate of £250.

With current exchange rates that equates to $340 or approximately 430 SBD per day.

For 4.5 days work per week that gives a weekly total of 1935 SBD.

We are therefore seeking 277 SBD per day from the Steem DAO for a total of 18 weeks.

FUTURE PLANS

Once the Steem Atlas site has reached the state of full independence from steemit.com external promotion will begin in earnest.

In parallel with this we will continue to add new features to Steem Atlas to enhance its attractiveness, stickiness and ease of use.

Key areas of feature development will involve gamification, pin customisation and pin promotion, advertising opportunities and an option for premium membership.

CONCLUSION

Steem Atlas is one of the most popular apps on the Steem blockchain.

It is a perfect use-case for the platform encompassing the concepts of Proof of Brain, Content with Purpose and Social Content Gaming.

We strongly believe it has massive potential to elevate the visibility of Steem on the world stage, and bring many thousands of users to the platform.

It is an intriguing blend of TripAdvisor and Wikipedia with an ever growing dataset of unique personalised reviews about shops, schools, mosques, parks, restaurants and many other types of places around the world.

With the backing of the DAO, Steem Atlas could be the golden ticket that brings new users to the platform en masse.
