I'm not the type of person that likes cooking. I know my way around the kitchen and I have experimented with a few recipes but it does not come naturally. Today I am very chuffed with myself. I have managed to prepare the perfect omelet.

This might not see like a huge success to anyone else but I have been trying to bake the perfect omelet for a few years now and every time I felt this is the one it flopped. Being in lock down has given me the time to practice and perfect the art of making a omelet.

So what were the key things that I had to rethink in order to master this skill:

  1. I had to get the temperature just right. If it was to high it would burn. If it was to low it would take for ever and the egg would just be running and it was just frustrating.
  2. Add the right amount of cooking oil. Too much and the edge of the omelet would boil and look bad and also the omelet would be very greasy. Too little and the omelet would just stick to the pan.
  3. Getting the right amount of egg to use per serving. I found that two large eggs are just right. Egg sizes differ so I also use the pan as a guide. If I add the egg mixture to the pan I try to spread a even amount covering the entire surface of the pan with a layer about 3 mm thick. Again this is just a rough estimate.
  4. How to flip the omelet.
  5. How long to fry the omelet.

This process has been a eye opener for me. I wanted to make the omelet the right way the first time I tried it. I did not want to put in the effort to learn the proper technique by doing it over and over. It seemed like and easy thing to do. I could not see how there could have been any skill involved. I think if I had got the omelet right the first time I attempted to make one I would have not learn anything. Failing can be hard but if you do not fail you will never know the feeling of overcoming failure.
