An old goat named Si Putih. Unlike the other goats, Si Putih had been blind since birth. However, despite the darkness of the world he saw, his ears were sharp, and his heart was far brighter than anyone else in the pen.
His owner, Mr. Samin, a simple farmer, never intended to sell or slaughter Si Putih. "He can't see, but he can feel," he said whenever a neighbor offered.
The young goats often teased Si Putih. They ran around him, bleating loudly, confusing him. But Si Putih never got angry. He just smiled—if goats could smile—and went on eating quietly.
One day, though, a major storm destroyed the village. Driven in terror, all the goats outside ran as the pen's fence collapsed in the wind. Every direction appeared identical, drenched in thunder and rain, and they were totally unsure which way to turn. Si Putih, who had never relied on vision, then became his counselor. He knew certainly the way from the sound of rain falling on leaves, from the stench of dirt, and from the clinking of bamboo blown by the wind. He spoke gently, addressing his friends with a low but confident bleat. The little goats trailed the song one after another, much like kids chasing a lullaby.
They all got behind an abandoned barn, where Mr. Samin frequently kept his hay. It was robust and safe from the storm.
Mr. Samin found the whole herd gathered safely with White in their midst when morning arrived and the clouds departed.
Nobody made fun of White from then on. In the dark, he grew to be the tiny barn's hero and mentor. White had demonstrated that actual light originates from within even if he lacked capacity to see the outside.
And in the ensuing few evenings, when the wind murmured gently, a gentle song could be heard originating from the herd. Not out of fear but as a silent tribute to the sightless man who had saved them from the hurricane.
