That Scary Moment: Why My Chest Pain Wasn’t a Heart Attack

A few months ago, I found myself sitting in the car, gripping the steering wheel, wondering if I needed to head straight to the ER. My chest hurt. Tight, uncomfortable, creeping down my left arm just enough to scare me. Like most people, my mind went straight to the worst: heart attack. Turns out? It wasn’t. And statistically, neither is most chest pain.

What I learned afterward completely changed how I think about these scary symptoms. Apparently, up to 80% of chest pain seen in primary care isn't even related to the heart. That’s something I read recently on LinkedIn, where there’s a post about it here:

That one fact alone gave me a lot of perspective.

Since then, I’ve gone down the rabbit hole a bit, trying to understand what’s really going on when our bodies send these panic-inducing signals. Sure, heart attacks are very real, but so are reflux, anxiety, pulled chest muscles, and other culprits that don’t get as much attention. A quick look at this breakdown helped clarify a lot for me:

AskDocDoc does a good job explaining the big picture without pushing people to panic unnecessarily.

Anxiety was a big part of my personal chest pain story, and it’s more common than people admit. I even came across this thoughtful little tweet that reminds us how anxiety and chest pain often go hand in hand:

It’s honestly fascinating how physical pain and mental health blur together sometimes. No shame in admitting that.

I also stumbled on a post on Threads that does a nice job helping folks figure out if their chest pain might be something urgent or something benign. It’s worth a glance if you’ve been through this too:

And if you’re like me and need something visual, this Pinterest post really helped me wrap my head around the different types of pain and what they typically mean:

One thing I’m trying to do more of now is treat my health like prevention, not just crisis management. This Instagram post really hit home for me about how catching small signs early can make all the difference:

Lastly, I saw this on Facebook — it’s a quick post that breaks down some myths around chest pain. Good food for thought next time you’re tempted to self-diagnose:
