# **Roopkund Lake:Where skeletons Reside**
![](https://www.makemytrip.com/blog/sites/default/files/images/rookund.jpg) [source](https://www.makemytrip.com) We have been surprised by zombies or walking deads in movies but imagine going to a waterbody and finding skeletons in real life.Not one or two but skeletons of almost 200 people!The Skeleton Lake or Roopkund Lake is a high altitude glacial lake at an elevation of 16,499 feet in Uttarakhand state of India. ![](http://youthuttarakhand.com/images/travel/travelpackage/Roopkund.jpg) [source](http://youthuttarakhand.com) This lake is famous for the hundreds of human skeletons(approx 200) that can be found at the edge and bottom of the lake once the snow melts.The lake is nestled in Himalayas and is a popular trekking destination.First discovered by Nanda Devi game reserve ranger H K Madhwal a forest guard in 1942.He discovered a few of the skeletons at the bottom of the lake while it was frozen. With the onset of summer the frozen lake melted, more skeletons were revealed in the lake, and around the lake’s edges. The altitude and cold temperatures, preserved flesh, nails, and hair as well. It is believed that these were travelers travelling.
