History of the Olympics: From Ancient Traditions to Modern Marvels

1) Ancient Beginnings :

The first recorded Olympic Games took place in 776 BCE in Olympia, Greece. These games were held in honor of the Greek god Zeus and featured only one event: a 192-meter foot race. These continued for nearly 12 centuries until Emperor Theodosius I ordered in 393 AD that all such "pagan cults" (religious groups that worship multiple deities, often linked to ancient or pre-Christian traditions) be banned.

2) Modern Revival:

The modern Olympic Games were revived much later in 1896, by Pierre de Coubertin, with the first Games held in Athens, Greece, attracting 241 athletes from 14 countries in 43 events marking the beginning of the era of the international sporting event we know today.

In 1996, it was taken aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis, highlighting the Games' global and even extraterrestrial reach.In 2000, the torch was carried underwater at the Great Barrier Reef as part of the Sydney Games relay.
