Da Avatar ai film di James Bond, sono molte le produzioni cinematografiche ambientate (almeno in parte) negli iconici paesaggi carsici del sud est asiatico. Le isole Andamane in Thailandia, l’area di Gullin in Cina e talvolta gli enormi affioramenti di roccia calcarea che si sviluppano attorno alla costa nord vietnamita, sono esempi eclatanti dei luoghi a cui mi riferisco, nei quali la geologia locale ha saputo creare panorami particolarmente suggestivi.

From Avatar to James Bond movies, there are countless blockbuster movies from that have had at least some scenes inspired by or filmed in South East Asia’s iconic karst landscapes. The Andaman Islands in Thailand, the Gullin province in China and the huge rocky outcrops on the Vietnamese coast not far from Hanoi, are perhaps the most striking examples of the scenery I’m referring to, in which local geology has provides some truly outstanding views.

A Cat Ba ed a Halong Bay (Vietnam), si trovano “outcrops” di roccia calcarea bianca spessi centinaia di metri che talvolta assumono forme straordinarie con torri alte di roccia isolate in mezzo al mare ed isole a forma di panettone con grotte, spiagge, e baie da esplorare. Non c’è spazio per la noia qui e nemmeno per la monotonia. La roccia calcarea della costa vietnamita si formò in un mare profondo durante il Siluriano (circa 300 milioni d’anni fa). Essa venne poi in gran parte esumata nel Paleocene, 40 milioni di anni dal presente, grazie a processi di cosiddetta “orogenesi”. Da quel momento in poi i massiccio carbonatico esposto all’ambiente sub-aereo venne bersagliato dagli implacabili processi di disfacimento atmosferici; erosione e dissoluzione chimica in primis.

In the areas of Cat Ba and Halong Bay (Vietnam) the local limestone outcrops appear in a rich variety of striking shapes and sizes. There are lonely monolith towers standing tens of meters high, dome shaped islands with gaping caves open to the sea and sandy beaches and bays to explore. There’s certainly little space for dullness and boredom here. The white rocks of the Vietnamese coast originate from deep sea deposits of Silurian age (some 300 million years ago). The limestone rocks were exhumed above sea level during the Paleocene, approximately 40 million years before present. Since then the white carbonate massifs have been exposed to the relentless weathering forces of the atmosphere, most of all erosion and chemical dissolution.

Le vicissitudini geologiche che si successero dal Paleocene in poi, quali l’andirivieni delle glaciazioni, il ripetuto innalzamento ed abbassamento del livello del mare, numerosi aggiustamenti tettonici (e molto altro ancora), scolpirono e modellarono la morfologia dei complesso calcareo di Cat Ba fino ai giorni nostri. Ciò che vediamo oggi è solo una insieme di cocci rotti e disgiunti appartenenti alla grande piattaforma calcarea di partenza. Sono pezzi di un puzzle incompleto coperti da una coltre verde di giungla e che se visti dall’alto richiamano l'aspetto del formaggio di Gruviera. Il tutto è corniciaio da un mare calmo, riparato e pescoso, se pur non proprio limpido e nemmeno molto pulito. ![20180502-DSC_8990.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmS8XAgCq7wnTrjKVSJBttyHkcxYd3a2zFq1eCZnidLptP/20180502-DSC_8990.jpg) Per esplorare le bellezze di questi luoghi è d’obbligo avere un' imbarcazione. Nell’entroterra si possono prendere dei taxi a remi (dotati di rematore personale) per escursioni lungo fiumi o corsi d’acqua. Un kayak invece va benissimo per esplorare le bellezze della costa e per circa 10 dollari al giorno se ne noleggia uno facilmente. È opportuno dare una occhiata alle mappe esposte nei vari porticcioli per farsi un idea della ubicazione dei "confini invisibili". Esistono infatti zone protette in cui è proibito accedere pure con imbarcazioni a remi. È meglio non farsi beccare in acque chiuse al traffico o comunque non fermarsi per dare spiegazioni agli addetti alla sicurezza (spesso severi) che non parlano Inglese e tantomeno Italiano. Utile è avere con se un GPS (basta anche uno smart-phone). È facile infatti confondersi ed anche perdere l'orientamento tra le grotte, le spiagge, e le isole della zona. Succede che la via di ritorno al porto di partenza può non apparire tanto ovvia all’imbrunire.

Of course, geological time imposed multiple global glacial events, tectonic plate adjustments, and continuous changes in sea levels (plus a lot more too) which all had an effect on moulding the Cat Ba and Halong area. All these forces combined worked in unison to produce the landscape we see today in northern Vietnam: broken, jagged, potholed and worn fragments of a once mighty limestone massif, scattered like pieces of a puzzle mantled by pockets of green jungle. All of this, framed in the clam waters of the western Tonkin Gulf, which unfortunately do not appear as particularly clean. To explore the karst areas of Vietnam you need a boat of some kind. There are “rowing taxis” available for a trip along the scenic rivers of the mainland but a hiring a kayak is definitely a great option for exploring the open waters along the coast. There are kayaks available in most port and resort locations for as little as ten US dollars a day. Once out at sea you need to be aware of invisible borders. There are protected areas within the Halong Bay district that are closed to all vessels including canoes and kayaks as well. Enforcement of the no go zones is strict and it’s best not to get caught out and trying to explain yourself in English, which isn't widely spoken. ![20180430-DSC_8909.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQGaSYHHW3TKxunHRX6hfRxQZgvgkFbNF8go3dm7mqoRt/20180430-DSC_8909.jpg) *A rowing taxi ride* It’s wise to have a GPS (any smartphone app will do) as a back up an aid. Its easy to get confused and even lost between the grottos beaches and limestone sculptures of the Cat Ba area especially if you wander out to sea a little more than expected. There are currents and tides that might not always work in your favour to keep in mind, as well as fishing boat traffic too.

Esiste una comunità di pescatori che vive e lavora nelle baie isolate di Cat Ba e Halong Bay. Essi sono ancora oggi dediti soprattutto alla pesca degli squid (calamari) che rivendono ai ristoranti di Hanoi e Saigon. Tuttavia, con l’apertura del Vietnam al turismo, avvenuta nei primi anni del 2000, il numero di pescatori sta gradualmente scemando. Il nuovo business della zona è indubbiamente il turismo come confermano le spesso improvvisate e mal attrezzate guest house che popolano le isole lungo la costa. Il cibo del post è ottimo ed ho scoperto che vale sempre la pena concludere la giornata in Vietnam con birra fresca ed un piatto di “Oc Len Sua Dua”: lumache di mare in salsa al latte di cocco. Ottimo!

A lively fishing community still thrives between Cat Ba and Halong Bay. Squid is the main catch and resource of the area and there’s a fleet of fishing vessels that appear to specialise solely in this. However, since Vietnam opened up to tourism at the turn of the century the fishing community and industry has been gradually diminishing in size. The big business now is tourism and there’s a rush to capitalise on the opportunities that visitors from abroad bring. Locals now organising scenic boat trips to rent kayaks or own and run a guest house. Food in Vietnam is very, very good. I often ended my day with a cool beer and some “Oc Len Sua Dua” a great local speciality consisting of sea snails in coconut sauce. Excellent!
