U.S. Memorial Day is such an interesting holiday. People planned picnics and outings and projects around the house. Some portion of us actually think about the day and what it is all about, which is a day to remember the U.S. service people who have died, giving your life to military service. Today, flags were flying. There were parades. I drove beneath a bridge where a soldier stood holding a flag, and he saluted. I saluted back. I don’t know anyone who died performing their military duty. But I still try to make sure I think of the day and its importance, and to feel grateful for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Did I spend the entire day on that? No, of course not. I enjoyed an extra weekend day. I worked around the house, did some writing, did errands with my daughter, and cooked dinner. I imagined retirement, when I will have more time to do the things I love. And I also felt grateful that my son’s military career came to an end very shortly after it began (5 months — though it felt like forever at the time), because he immediately got Covid, then got really depressed and anxious, then got injured…. and was finally released. And I thought of all the moms who have lost their sons and their hearts to war. And my heart broke for them. Why must we fight? Why do we have to have wars?
