Why is Independence Day celebrated at Shaheed Minar on February 21st?

I live in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has a lot of history to this day that I don't even know about. However, there are some special days that are honorable days for Bangladesh. The history of Bengalis' sacrifice for the Bengali language is a unique and glorious chapter. On February 21, 1952, students and ordinary people of the then East Bengal took to the streets to demand that their mother tongue, Bengali, be given the status of the state language. The bloody outcome of this movement took place on the premises of Dhaka University, where Salam, Rafiq, Barkat, Jabbar and many others were martyred by police firing. Shaheed Minar was built in their memory. It is a symbol of our national identity.

However, the question arises, why is Independence Day celebrated at Shaheed Minar while February 21 is the International Mother Language Day? To find the answer to this question, we have to look back at the continuity of the language movement and its impact.

The Language Movement was essentially the first major resistance of the Bengali nation. It was not limited to the demand for language, but included political, cultural and ethnic independence. It was through this movement that the sense of independent nationhood was born among the Bengalis. The mass uprising of 1969, the victory of the Bengalis in the 1970 elections and finally the great liberation war and the achievement of independence in 1971 came along the path of the Language Movement.

Shaheed Minar is also considered the center of every voice, protest and struggle of the Bengalis on the path to independence. Standing at this minaret on February 21st to celebrate Independence Day means that we remember the martyrs who gave their lives for the language and honor their sacrifice as the first step in the freedom struggle.
