Organic matter is a vital component of the soil, especially on surfaces planted with grasses, its presence directly influences the health of the soil and, therefore, the productivity and quality of the grass. Soil organic matter consists of plant and animal remains in different stages of decomposition, includes microorganisms, humus and other organic compounds.

In these environments, where grasses and other herbaceous plants dominate the landscape, organic matter plays a crucial role in soil health, vegetation productivity and the resilience of the ecosystem as a whole. The organic matter of the soil as said above is a complex mixture of plant and animal remains in various stages of decomposition, along with the microorganisms that decompose them. In grasslands, most of the organic matter comes from the roots and remains of herbaceous plants, which decompose more quickly than the wood of trees.

In addition, it improves the structure of the soil, increasing its ability to retain water, nutrients and reducing erosion.

Grasslands are important carbon sinks, and soil organic matter plays a fundamental role in the sequestration of atmospheric carbon, through photosynthesis, plants capture carbon dioxide and convert it into organic matter, which is then stored in the soil, the amount of carbon stored in soil organic matter depends on factors such as climate, vegetation type and pasture management. Organic matter provides a habitat for a great diversity of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi and protozoa, which play a fundamental role in the decomposition of organic matter and nutrient cycling, these microorganisms also contribute to soil health and the suppression of plant diseases.

An important question is how to increase the organic matter in pastures this could be achieved by applying rational and rotational grazing since, this allows the grass to recover, increasing the biomass and the amount of organic waste in the soil, providing organic fertilizers such as manure, compost and other organic materials can enrich the soil with organic matter, in these spaces bovine manure accumulates since, they are the areas where this type of ruminant species are managed. On the other hand, legume crops fix atmospheric nitrogen and increase biomass, improving soil fertility.

In summary, organic matter is essential for the health and productivity of grasslands, its proper management is crucial to ensure the sustainability of livestock production and soil conservation.
