On this day in 1971, Bangladesh emerged as a new independent state in the world. But from the beginning the people of East Bengal were subjected to exploitation and deprivation by the ruling class of West Pakistan. Bengali's demand for its own distinct nationhood was strongly asserted through the language movement.
