One of the routines I’ve grown to love as a mother is the little conversations I have with my daughter when she comes back from school. Every day, I ask her: *How was school today? Did you learn something new? Did anything make you laugh? Did anything make you sad?* They’re simple questions, but they help me stay connected to her world. Through them, I get a glimpse of what excites her, what confuses her, and what shapes her tiny but growing heart. Do you know mummy can also have a long or even bad day?”* We laughed about it, and I said it casually, almost playfully. I didn’t know that small comment would stick with her. But it did. Days later, out of the blue, just as we got home from school, she turned to me and said, *Mummy, how was your day?* It caught me off guard, not because of the question itself, but because of the sincerity in her voice. I smiled and decided to answer her properly. I told her how my day had gone. How I’d been on the computer from 9 am to 3 pm, trying to complete a long list of tasks, but barely made it halfway. I told her how I had to leave everything to go pick her and her sister from school, and now that we were home, I still had a pile of things waiting for me: cleaning, cooking, bathing them, checking homework, and making sure dinner was ready before bedtime. She paused and looked at me quietly, like she was trying to process everything I just said. Then she said, *“Okay, mummy, I will do my homework and help my sister with hers, so that you can go and cook.”* I was deeply touched, not just because she offered to help, but because she *saw me*. She saw my tiredness, my overwhelm, my effort, and without being asked, she wanted to ease my burden in the little way she could. A small act of kindness, a soft word and a willing hand. That simple exchange reminded me that empathy doesn’t wait for age. Children notice more than we think, and the seeds we plant, in conversations, in tone, in values, do take root. It also reminded me to look out for others, too. We all carry loads, emotional, mental, physical, and often, just the question *“How was your day?”* can open a door. A moment of awareness can be enough to make someone feel seen. So now, I try to ask others the same question I ask my daughter every day: *“How was your day?”* And if they share, I try to truly listen. Because kindness begins with seeing.
