Wo fange ich denn am besten an?

Wer mich kennt, der weiß, dass ich nun seit 35 Jahren Pen-and-Paper-Rollenspiele spiele und auch schon 5 oder 6 Jahre Runden online leite.

Immer wieder kommt bei mir der Wunsch auf, Pen-and-Paper auch häufiger in meinen Twitch-Content einfließen zu lassen.

Seitdem ich an Pertapia arbeite, ist dieser Wunsch stärker geworden, aber noch traue ich mich nicht.

Das größte Hindernis ist, dass ich mich selbst kenne, und ich habe Angst, dass ich die Lust verliere bzw. dass meine Depressionen das Projekt lähmen.

Ein weiterer Grund ist meine sehr instabile Internet-Situation. Für die Shadowrun-Runde mit @dera123, @rambutan.art und @kanrat reicht es, aber o2 muss nur mal wieder einen schlechten Tag haben, und dann muss der Stream ausfallen.

Where should I start best?

Those who know me know that I have been playing pen-and-paper role-playing games for 35 years and have also been running online sessions for 5 or 6 years.

I often feel the desire to incorporate pen-and-paper more frequently into my Twitch content.

Since I started working on Pertapia, this desire has grown stronger, but I still don't dare to do it.

The biggest obstacle is that I know myself, and I am afraid that I will lose interest or that my depression will paralyze the project.

Another reason is my very unstable internet situation. For the Shadowrun session with @dera123, @rambutan.art, and @kanrat, it is sufficient, but o2 just has to have a bad day again, and then the stream has to be canceled.

Aber was hat das alles mit Foundry zu tun, fragt ihr euch jetzt zu Recht.

Nun, seit einiger Zeit bin ich unzufrieden mit Roll20 als Plattform und suche Alternativen.

Ich gebe zu, die Unzufriedenheit hat auch ein bisschen damit zu tun, dass ich gerne mehr europäische Alternativen in mein Leben einbauen möchte.

Zuerst bin ich auf die französische Seite Lets Role gestoßen und war durchaus begeistert, musste dann aber feststellen, dass zumindest für Shadowrun 6 die Charakterbögen genauso fehlerhaft sind wie bei Roll20 :(

Des Weiteren ist Lets Role auf AWS-Servern gehostet, also Amazon, was eher doof ist.

Also habe ich nachgefragt, welche D&D-Runden ich auf Twitch regelmäßig schaue, nutzen, und alle haben gesagt, sie benutzen Foundry VTT.

Foundry ist ein Virtual Tabletop, das man entweder lokal auf dem eigenen Rechner hosten kann, einen der Cloud-Partner nutzen kann oder seinen eigenen Server dafür aufsetzen kann.

Foundry kann durch Plugins erweitert werden und bietet dadurch viel mehr als Roll20 oder Lets Role und ist auch recht hübsch.

Foundry ist aber auch nicht ganz günstig; momentan kostet Foundry 55 €, aber nur der Spielleiter braucht eine Lizenz.

Auf der anderen Seite, wenn ich die 55 Euro mit einem Roll20-Abo oder einem Lets Role-Abo vergleiche, wären die Kosten spätestens in einem Jahr wieder drin.

Meine größte Sorge bei Foundry ist, dass sich die Spieler von außen nicht verbinden können. Wir erinnern uns an das WOLTK-Server Debakel von vor ungefähr 6 Monaten.

Somit würde ich dann einen zusätzlichen VPS bei Contabo benötigen, und das könnte nerven kosten, diesen einzurichten.

Würdet ihr euch Pen-and-Paper auf Twitch mit mir als Spielleiter anschauen oder sogar teilnehmen wollen?

Ich würde gerne eine kleine Kampagne mit Pathfinder 2e Remaster auf Pertapia leiten.

PS: Mir ist klar, dass Foundry ein US-amerikanisches Unternehmen ist, aber dadurch, dass ich Foundry selbst hosten kann, habe ich da weniger Probleme mit.

But what does all of this have to do with Foundry, you might rightly ask.

Well, for some time now, I have been dissatisfied with Roll20 as a platform and am looking for alternatives.

I admit that my dissatisfaction also has a bit to do with my desire to incorporate more European alternatives into my life.

First, I came across the French site Lets Role and was quite excited, but I had to realize that at least for Shadowrun 6, the character sheets are just as flawed as they are on Roll20 :(

Furthermore, Lets Role is hosted on AWS servers, which means Amazon, and that’s rather unfortunate.

So I asked what D&D groups I regularly watch on Twitch are using, and they all said they use Foundry VTT.

Foundry is a virtual tabletop that can either be hosted locally on your own computer, use one of the cloud partners, or set up your own server for it.

Foundry can be expanded with plugins, offering much more than Roll20 or Lets Role and is also quite nice to look at.

However, Foundry is not entirely cheap; currently, Foundry costs €55, but only the game master needs a license.

On the other hand, when I compare the €55 with a Roll20 subscription or a Lets Role subscription, the costs would be covered again within a year at the latest.

My biggest concern with Foundry is that players from the outside cannot connect. We remember the WOLTK server debacle from about 6 months ago.

Thus, I would need an additional VPS from Contabo, and that could be a hassle to set up.

Would you be interested in watching pen-and-paper on Twitch with me as the game master or even participating?

I would love to run a small campaign with Pathfinder 2e Remaster on Pertapia.

PS: I am aware that Foundry is a US-based company, but since I can host Foundry myself, I have fewer issues with that.
