I was sleeping in the middle of the day on a quiet and hot day, waiting for my knowledge to settle in my subconscious. The midday sleep was a universal tradition. At midday, everyone was asleep, except for the block guards on duty. If a block's guard attacked another block while blocks were asleep, that guard would be punished by his own block.

I woke up to an annoying ringing sound I hadn't heard in a long time. I panicked. I was drowsy. I thought they found us, but luckily Sarah's voice was starting to calm me down.

In this livable world of my grandfather's legacy, there was a lake, a small forest, a house and a tomb. The grave belonged to my grandfather. Except for the tomb, it was my grandfather's consolation prize. This world and Sarah were a secret between the two of us. For the other blocs to learn about Sarah and, moreover, this world, which is the only habitable place on earth we know, meant the resumption of wars and perhaps the extinction of this life. Besides, the block I was the protector of didn't seem to know much about what was going on. Günortası uykusu, benimsenegelmiş evrensel bir gelenekti. Günortasında nöbetçi blok koruyucuları hariç herkes uykuya dalardı. Şayet bloklar uykudayken bir blokun koruyucusu tarafından başka bir bloka saldırı gerçekleştirilirse o koruyucu kendi bloku tarafından cezalandırılırdı. Uzun zamandır duymadığım, rahatsız edici bir çınlama sesiyle uyandım. Paniklemiştim. Uyku sersemiydim. Bizi buldular sandım ama neyse ki Sarah'ın sesi beni sakinleştirmeye başlamıştı. "Günaydın efendim." "Günortası Sarah! Bu ses de neyin nesiydi?" "Efendim sakin olun! Herhangi bir saldırı altında değiliz. Birkaç uyandırma sesi denedim ama uyanmadınız." "Bakalım neyin varmış?" Sarah, benim tek arkadaşımdı. O, benim bu gezegendeki gözümdü. Sarah, yapay zekamdı. Onunki tıpkı benimki gibi çalışıyordu. Adeta kopyalanmıştı. Sarah, Milenyum başlamadan önce dedemin akıl almaz projelerinden biriydi. O kadar uçuk bir projeydi ki onu herkesten saklamıştı. Benden bile... Sarah ile dedem ölüm döşeğindeyken onun bana verdiği koordinat verileri sayesinde tanıştım. Dedem bana bu verilerle sadece Sarah'ı değil, aynı zamanda yeni bir dünya da miras bırakmıştı. Gerçek bir dünya... Dedemin mirası yaşanabilir bu dünyada bir göl, küçük bir orman, bir ev ve bir de mezar bulunuyordu. Mezar dedeme aitti. Mezar dışındakiler, dedemin bana teselli ikramiyesiydi. Bu dünya ve Sarah, ikimizin arasında bir sırdı. Diğer blokların Sarah'ı ve dahası yeryüzünde bildiğimiz tek yaşanılabilir yer olan bu dünyayı öğrenmeleri demek, savaşların yeniden başlaması ve belki de bu canlılığın yok olması demekti. Kaldı ki koruyucusu olduğum blokun da olanlardan pek haberi yok gibiydi. Ancak nasıl olduysa blokum uzun süre ortalıktan kaybolmamdan şüphelenmiş ve türlü söylentiler ve istihbaratlar kod dünyasına, yeraltına yayılmıştı. Yine de bizi bulamamışlardı. Sarah'ın öyle karmaşık bir yapısı vardı ki dünyamızı bulmaları ve yapay zekaya tanıklık etmeleri için önce Sarah'ı alt etmeleri gerekiyordu. Sarah, beni her şeyden büyük bir titizlikle koruyordu. Bu kurtarılmış bölgede mağduru olduğum çınlama sesinin etkilerinden kurtulmaya çalışıyordum. Bir yandan da Sarah'ın sunduğu sorunu çözmeye çalışıyordum. "Bir mesaj efendim.
