He was trying to stop the Nazis and accidentally discovered something that millions of people use today and surely you too, Percy Spencer was a military engineer who worked with cutting-edge, highly secret technology.

In the middle of World War II he was dedicated to designing components for American radars, which were used to detect Nazi planes in the sky before their bombs fell on Allied cities; One day, while he was working, he noticed something strange, the chocolate bar he had in his pocket was melting and it was not hot, nor was the sun. Right in front of him he had that device that he had been testing all morning, a magnetron, it was used to convert electricity into electromagnetic waves.

Instead of freaking out or turning off the machine, Spencer did what any genius with a brilliant scientific mind would do, he went for popcorn, put it in front of the magnetron, turned up the power and, boom, made it pop, then tried an egg. The egg also exploded, interestingly, and instead of worrying about cleaning up all that mess, what he did was design the first metal box to contain all those waves, the microwave was born.

Decades later almost everyone has one at home, so the next time you heat up milk for coffee in the microwave, remember that it all started with a military radar, a chocolate bar and a Nazi hunter who liked popcorn.
