There may be some of you who ask why this human nature can affect the cryptocurrency market, even though these two things are two things that are not related to each other. With regard to the law of demand, there are 2 human traits that can affect cryptocurrency price movements indirectly, namely **fear and greed** When most people are afraid that a cryptocurrency will decline and they are afraid that they will experience a loss, then these people will start to decide to sell their cryptocurrency in order to avoid these losses. But the impact of the sales made by these people is that the value of the cryptocurrency will also decrease. On the other hand, if the dominance of the cryptocurrency market is large, many people want to buy or even buy large amounts (greedy) with the aim of making a profit, then the value of the cryptocurrency will want to increase as well. However, there is a very important point that many people in the cryptocurrency market don't know. These two properties can provide a signal when is the best time to buy and when is the best time to sell our crypto assets. Then the indicator created by CNNMoney was adapted to the cryptocurrency market by a platform called [Alternative.me](https://alternative.me/) which is a platform to optimize the connection between various software and other alternative products.

The Fear and Greed Index is made to look like a speedometer on a motorized vehicle or car. The level of emotional strength that exists in the cryptocurrency market is shown by a needle that will show a number in the range **0 to 100**. The lower the number indicated by the needle, the emotion in the market is getting closer to **Fear**, while if the number shown on the indicator is getting bigger, the emotion in the market is getting closer to **Greed**. Based on the range, the Fear and Greed Index can be separated into 5 parts, including: Range | Market Emotion ---- | ---- 0 - 20 | Extreme Fear 20 - 40 | Fear 40 - 60 | Neutral 60 - 80 | Greed 80 - 100 | Extreme Greed If the needle on the indicator points to numbers 0 to 40, which means the market's emotional condition is at the **Fear** **and Extreme Fear** stage, then this indicates that the dominant traders and investors are or are already very worried and trying to sell the asset. their crypto and this is also a signal for us to make a purchase. Then if the indicator shows the numbers 60 to 100 then this is a signal for us to start selling the crypto assets that we have.

The Fear and Greed Index will show how the market's emotional condition on that day and will be updated when the day has changed. So it can be said that this indicator is a daily indicator, unlike other indicators that can be changed with several types of timeframes. The alternative.me platform which is one of the platforms that makes this indicator uses several data that have their respective percentages so that the total of the data will reach 100% and produce the value of the Fear and Greed Index, some of the data used by them include: ### 1. Market Volatility (25%)

Volatility is a price change that occurs in cryptocurrencies or is often referred to as **"market mood"**. If a cryptocurrency experiences a very drastic price change such as a sharp rise or otherwise free fall then the level of volatility it has at that time is quite high. Alternative.me platform fetches data **volatility and max. drawdowns** of Bitcoin and then they compare it to the average price of Bitcoin over the last **30 and 90 days.** According to them, if a cryptocurrency market has a high level of volatility, then it is not a good thing and the market is a scary market for investors. Therefore they give a percentage of **25%** for this data because it is considered very important data for the Fear and Greed indicator. ### 2. Market Volume and Momentum (25%)

Just like market volatility data, market volume data has the same portion, namely **25%** of the total data in the Fear and Greed indicator. The data taken is volume data as well as market momentum data on that day and then compared back to the average price of Bitcoin for the last **30 and 90 days.** If the volume that occurs in the market is dominated by buyers who make the market experience a bullish trend momentum, the Fear and Greed indicator will conclude that the market that day is in the **"Greedy"** phase. Meanwhile, if the volume that occurs in the market is dominated by sellers who make the market experience a bearish trend momentum, the Fear and Greed indicator will conclude that the market that day is in the **"Fear"** phase. ### 3. Social Media (15%)

It is undeniable that social media has greatly influenced our lives almost as a whole. This also has an impact on the cryptocurrency market where the sentiments on social media have been able to influence the emotional behavior of the cryptocurrency market. Platform Alternative.me takes sentiment data from various social media such as Twitter and Reddit as one of the data from Social Media which they will include in the Fear and Greed indicator. This platform will conduct a survey on various tags related to cryptocurrencies and they will check how much and how fast the interactions are taking place on those tags For example, if a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin is being discussed and trending in various countries on Twitter in a positive way, then the Fear and Greed indicator will conclude that the emotions that exist in the Bitcoin market at that time are in the **"Greedy"** phase. The portion given for data from this social media is **15%.** ### 4. Survey (15%)

In addition to taking data from various sources for the indicators they make. The Alternative.me platform also collects data that they obtain themselves by conducting direct surveys of their users. They created a special polling platform called strawpoll.com and from this platform, they will get data in the form of a sentiment picture of the cryptocurrency group. This is the same as the data obtained through several social media that have been described previously. The dominance of a cryptocurrency is very important, for example, Bitcoin which is a coin that is still at the top of the cryptocurrency Market Capitalization ranking, which at the time of writing this article has a market capitalization dominance percentage of **42.42%** As we know that Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency created and is often referred to as **Mother of Cryptocurrency** and Bitcoin is also a coin that has the most stable price increase compared to other altcoins, this is also what makes Bitcoin often used as a shelter by investors because it is considered safer to invest in Bitcoin than altcoins that have a high speculative level. Because more and more investors are investing in Bitcoin, the level of Bitcoin's dominance in the cryptocurrency market will increase, so if this happens, the Fear and Greed indicator will take this data and conclude that the Bitcoin market is greedy. If the opposite happens, where investors prefer altcoins over Bitcoin, which makes Bitcoin's dominance decrease, the Fear and Greed indicator will conclude that the market's emotions at that time were afraid. ### 6. Trends (10%)

The trend or prestige of a cryptocurrency will also affect the movement of the Fear and Greed indicator. The Alternative.me platform will take data from a google search and they will see how big a trend is that a cryptocurrency has by seeing how much the cryptocurrency is searched for by people surfing on google. If there is an increase in keywords related to cryptocurrencies that are searched by many people, it will be indicated as a spike in trend and the Fear and Greed Index will read it as a greedy market emotion. The first chart is a graph of the market emotional value of Bitcoin provided by the Fear and Greed Index for the last 1 month, and the second image is a picture of the price movement of Bitcoin over the last 1 month as well. From the two pictures, you can see that the price movement of Bitcoin is very in line with the emotional movements that occur in the Bitcoin market. When the market's emotional numbers begin to decline, approaching extreme fear, the price of Bitcoin also decreases. Then when the market emotion starts to increase approaching the Greed phase, then the value of Bitcoin also increases. From this, we can get something useful, which is the emotional movement shown by the Fear and Greed indicator is almost always accurate with the price movement in Bitcoin. In this example, I will show you how to identify trend reversal signals originating from the Fear and Greed Index with the help of the **Average Directional Index (ADX)** indicator which has been modified with the addition of 2 other lines, namely the **DI+** and **DI-** lines The reason I chose the ADX indicator as an auxiliary indicator is that this indicator is one of the indicators that are useful for determining the strength of the current trend in the market. It has a range of numbers that will represent how strong the trend is in the market, the ranges include: * **0 - 25:** The trend is weak or there is no trend at all. * **25 - 50:** There is a trend in the market. * **50 - 75:** The trend is very strong. * **75 - 100:** The trend is very extreme. Then as I said, the indicator I chose has been slightly modified with the addition of 2 other auxiliary lines. The DI+ line is a line that represents an uptrend, while DI- is a line that represents a downtrend. Simply put, if the DI+ line is above the DI- line, the trend is in a bullish phase. On the other hand, if the DI- line is above the DI+ line, the trend is Bearish. Then on that date, there was also a cut between the two DI lines on the ADX indicator, the DI+ line which was initially below the direction turned above the DI+ line, which means the trend which was originally Bearish has turned into Bullish. Advantages of Fear and Greed Index * **Shows the latest market emotions** The main advantage of this indicator is that it is able to show how the condition of market emotions is in real-time. We never know how the emotional conditions of various people in the cryptocurrency market are due to our limitations to knowing it. We can see this by the many variations in the types of data taken for only one indicator, then the data sources that were taken also come from various sources which can make the accuracy of the signal given better. * **Easy to understand indicators** The ease of understanding an indicator is important because the easier it is to understand, the more friendly the indicator will be too many people. The Fear and Greed indicator is one indicator that has a very easy-to-understand appearance. Unlike other indicators that often use many lines and numbers, this indicator uses a display that is similar to a vehicle speedometer which is certainly often seen by many people. With this, people who have just seen it are not too unfamiliar with the appearance given. ### 2. Lack of Fear and Greed Index * **Very few types of cryptocurrencies** The first drawback that I think I lack the most is the type of cryptocurrency that is compatible with this indicator. Until now, the only cryptocurrency that can use this indicator is Bitcoin. Dengan hal hukum permintaan tersebut, ada 2 sifat manusia yang bisa mempengaruhi pergerakan harga cryptocurrency secara tidak langsung, yaitu rasa **takut dan serakah** Ketika sebagian besar orang merasa takut akan sebuah cryptocurrency akan mengalami penurunan dan mereka takut bahwa mereka akan mengalami kerugian, maka orang-orang tersebut akan mulai memutuskan untuk menjual cryptocurrency yang mereka miliki agar bisa menghindari kerugian tersebut. Tetapi dampak dari penjualan yang dilakukan oleh orang-orang tersebut adalah nilai dari cryptocurrency tersebut akan ikut menurun. Sebaliknya jika dominasi pada pasar sebuah cryptocurrency banyak yang ingin membeli atau bahkan membeli dengan jumlah yang besar (serakah) dengan tujuan akan mendapatkan keuntungan, maka nilai dari cryptocurrency tersebut akan ingin naik juga. Akan tetapi, ada hal yang sangat penting yang tidak diketahui oleh banyak orang yang berada pada pasar cryptocurrency. Lalu indikator yang dibuat oleh CNNMoney ini diadaptasikan pada pasar cryptocurrency oleh sebuah platform yang bernama [Alternative.me](https://alternative.me/) yang merupakan sebuah paltform untuk mengoptimalkan koneksi antara berbagai perangkat lunak dan produk-produk alternatif lainnya.

Indikator Fear and Greed dibuat dengan tampilan seperti speedometer yang ada pada kendaraan bermotor maupun mobil. Tingkat kekuatan emosi yang ada pada pasar cryptocurrency diperlihatkan dengan sebuah jarum yang akan menunjukkan sebuah angka dengan range **0 sampai 100**. Semakin rendah angka yang ditunjuk oleh jarum tersebut maka emosi yang ada pada pasar semakin mendekati **Fear** sedangkan jika angka yang ditunjukkan pada indikator semakin besar maka emosi yang ada di pasar semakin condong kepada **Greed**. Berdasarkan rangenya, Fear and Greed Index bisa dipisahkan menjadi 5 bagian, antara lain: Range | Kondisi Pasar ---- | ---- 0 - 20 | Extreme Fear 20 - 40 | Fear 40 - 60 | Neutral 60 - 80 | Greed 80 - 100 | Extreme Greed Jika jarum pada indikator menunjuk pada angka 0 sampai 40 yang berarti kondisi emosional pasar sedang pada tahap **Fear** **dan Extreme Fear**, maka ini menandakan bahwa para trader dan investor dominan sedang atau sudah sangat khawatir dan berusaha untuk menjual aset kripto mereka dan ini juga merupakan sinyal untuk kita melakukan pembelian. Lalu jika indikator menunjukkan pada angka 60 sampai 100 maka ini merupakan sinyal untuk kita agar mulai menjual aset kripto yang kita miliki.

Grafik pertama adalah grafik nilai emosi pasar dari Bitcoin yang diberikan oleh Fear and Greed Index selama 1 bulan terakhir, dan gambar kedua adalah gambar pergerakan harga dari Bitcoin selama 1 bulan terakhir juga. Dari kedua gambar tersebut bisa kalian lihat bahwa pergerakan harga dari Bitcoin sangat selras dengan pergerakan emosi yang terjadi pada pasar Bitcoin. Saat angka emosi pasar mulai menurun mendekati ekstrim fear maka harag Bitcoin pun ikut mengalami penurunan. Lalu saat emosi pasar mulai meningkat mendekati fase Greed, maka nilai Bitcoin pun ikut meningkat. Dari hal ini, kita bisa mendapatkan sesuatu hal yang berguna, yaitu pergerakan emosi yang diperlihatkan oleh indikator Fear and Greed hampir selalu akurat dengan pergerakan harga yang ada pada Bitcoin. Pada contoh ini saya akan memperlihatkan bagaiamana cara mengindentifikasi sinyal pembalikan tren yang berasal dari Fear and Greed Index dengan bantuan indikator **Average Directional Index (ADX)** yang sudah dimodifikasi dengan tambahan bantuan 2 garis lainnya yaitu garis **DI+** dan **DI-**. Alasan saya memlih indikator ADX sebagai indikator pembantu adalah karena indikator ini merupakan salah satu indikator yang berguna untuk menentukan kekuatan tren yang sedang terjadi di pasar. Ia memiliki range angka yang akan mempersentasikan seberapa kuat tren yang sedang terjadi di pasar, rangenya antara lain: * **0 - 25:** Tren sedang melemah atau tidak ada tren sama sekali. * **25 - 50:** Sedang ada tren yang terjadi pada pasar. * **50 - 75:** Tren sangat kuat. * **75 - 100:** Tren yang terjadi sangat ekstrim. Lalu seperti yang saya bilang bahwa indikator yang saya pilih ini sudah sedikti dimodifikasi dengan tambahan 2 garis pembantu lainnya. Garis DI+ merupakan garis yang mempersentasikan tren naik, sedangkan DI- merupakan garis yang mempersentasikan tren turun. Simpelnya jika garis DI+ berada diatas garis DI- maka tren sedang berada pada fase Bullish. Sebaliknya jika garis DI- yang berada diatas garis DI+ maka tren yang terjadi adalah tren Bearish. Dan nilai yang diberikan Indikator ADX pun memperlihatkan bahwa sedang ada tren yang terjadi pada pasar Bitcoin, nilai yang diberikan indikator ADX sebesar **23.17**. Lalu pada tanggal tersebut juga ada terjadi potongan antara kedua garis DI yang ada pada indikator ADX, garis DI- yang awalnya berada dibawah berubah arah menjadi diatas garis DI+ yang berarti tren yang awalnya Bullish sudah berubah menjadi Bearish. Dan nilai yang diberikan Indikator ADX pun memperlihatkan bahwa sedang ada tren yang terjadi pada pasar Bitcoin, nilai yang diberikan indikator ADX sebesar **33.25**. Lalu pada tanggal tersebut ada terjadi juga potongan antara kedua garis DI yang ada pada indikator ADX, garis DI+ yang awalnya berada dibawah berubah arah menjadi diatas garis DI+ yang berarti tren yang awalnya Bearish sudah berubah menjadi Bullish. Dari semua hal yang telah saya jelaskan pada penjelasan sebelumnya, ada beberapa hal yang merupakan kelebihan dan kekurangan dari Fear and Greed Index, antara lain: ### 1. Kelebihan Fear and Greed Index * **Memperlihatkan emosi pasar terkini** Kelebihan yang paling utama dari indikator ini adalah mampu memperlihatkan bagaimana kondisi dari emosi pasar secara real-time. Kita tidak pernah tau bagaimana kondisi emosi dari berbagai orang yang berada dalam pasar cryptocurrency karena berbagai keterbasan kita untuk mengetahuinya. Dengan adanya indikator Fear and Greed kita bisa mendapatkan info tersebut yang dipersentasikan menggunakan sebuah nilai yang mampu diukur sehingga akan memudahkan kita dalam menganbl keputusan trading maupun investasi. * **Mampu memberikan sinyal pembalikan tren** Indikator Fear and Greed sudah terbukti mampu memberikan sinyal pembalik sebuah tren. Jika emosi pasar sudah masuk kedalam fase ekstrim, baik itu Fear ataupun Greed, maka kita sudah bisa bersiap-siap untuk mengambil tindakan karena tren yang sedang terjadi pada saat itu kemungkinan besar akan berubah. * **Keakuratan data** Indikator Fear and Greed memiliki tingkat keakuratan data yang sanagta baik. Hal ini bisa kita lihat dengan banyaknya variasi jenis data yang diambil hanya untuk satu indikator, lalu sumber data yang diambil pun berasal dari berbagai sumber yang bisa membuat akurasi sinyal yang diberikan semakin baik. * **Indikator yang mudah dipahami** Kemudahan dalam memahami sebuah indiaktor merupakan hal yang penting, karena semakin muda dipahami maka indikator tersebut akan semkain ramah ke banyak orang. Indikator Fear and Greed merupakan salah satu indikator yang memiliki penampilan yang sangat mudah untuk dipahami. Tidak seperti indikator lainnya yang sering menggunakan banyak garis dan angka, indikator ini menggunakan sebuah tampilan yang mirip speedometer kendaraan yang pastinya sering dilihat oleh orang banyak. Dengan ini membuat orang yang baru melihatnya pun sudah tidak terlalu asing dengan tampilan yang diberikan. ### 2. Kekurangan Fear and Greed Index * **Jenis cryptocurrency yang sangat sedikit** Kekurangan pertama yang menurut saya paling saya kurang adalah jenis cryptocurrency yang kompetibel dengan indikator ini. Sampai saat ini, cryptocurrency yang bisa menggunakan indikator ini hanyalah Bitcoin. Tentu saja hal ini sangat disayangkan karena jenis cryptocurrency yang sudah banyak sampai saat ini dan banyak orang yang mulai tertarik untuk berinvestasi pada berbagai altcoin lainnya. * **Tidak bisa menggunakan berbagai variasi timeframe** Kekurangan selanjutnya adalah indikator ini hanya memperlihatkan kondisi emosi pasar dengan timeframe 1 hari dan datanya akan diupdate 1 x 24 jam. Denagn ini membuat indikator ini agak kurang cocok untuk digunakan oleh trader yang bertipe jangka waktu yang terlalu singkat seperti 1 menit sampai 5 menit atau investor jangka panjang seperti 1 tahun sampai 10 tahunan. Indikator ini akan lebih cocok kepada trader jangka menegah seperti swing trader karena timeframe yang digunakan sama yaitu 1 hari. * **Indikator yang masih baru** Indikator Fear and Greed awalnya merupakan sebuah indiaktor yang dibuat untuk melihat emosi pasar saham di Amerika Serikat. Indikator ini baru diadaptasikan pada pasar cryptocurrency setelah pamor cryptocurrency naik karena melonjaknya harga Bitcoin beberapa tahun terakhir.
