Soon as I rode up, two guards with rifles blocked my path. I asked if this was the Gray plantation. One of them said yeah, Caliga Hall, and told me that was as close as I was getting. I told them I was recently deputized and there on the sheriff’s orders. One looked me over like I was full of it, but eventually let me through, saying I could come in, but he wasn’t the one to talk to. Once inside, I asked a worker if he could talk. He looked at me like I was crazy and said if I wanted conversation then I need to go find Beau Gray. --- I found Beau sitting with a book in his hand, acting like we were old friends. He seemed too polite to trust and a little too eager to talk. He Said that they didn’t get many strangers around here and now, suddenly, there were all these helpful Yankees showing up. I told him I was just looking for work. He smirked and said not to worry, my secret was safe with him. When I asked what secret, he got quiet, then told me he had one of his own. He told me that he was in love with Penelope Braithwaite. I didn’t know whether to laugh or ride off. Said Penelope was different, like something out of the future. He asked me for help, said he’d pay me later to deliver a letter and bracelet to her. I wasn’t interested at first, didn’t want to be caught in some rich kid’s feud, but you know money has a way of changing things. I took the letter, eventually. --- After dodging the guards, I found Penelope sitting by a gazebo, just like he said. She was surprised at first, but lit up when I said the letter was from Beau. She Said he was a bit strange, but more human than the rest of their backward families. Talked about how her family wanted to send her away if they found out, maybe to Ohio. I said not really. She then said that hers couldn’t stand her for having ideas beyond her place. Then she handed me a reply letter and asked me to give it to Beau. I said sure and rode back. --- Back at Caliga Hall, the guards let me in this time without a word. I found Beau in the stables. He paid me, then quickly asked if Penelope had sent something back. I gave him the letter. He read it like it was gospel. Said she’d get herself killed with all her talk about women’s suffrage. Around here, folks barely wanted men voting. He begged me to help again. I said I wasn’t looking to get involved. Then he offered more money. I gave in, but told him no more love letters. He said we needed to get to Rhodes. Penelope was attending a rally, and he feared his family would do something awful. We rode off fast, Beau in a panic the whole way. He kept saying he believed in the cause but didn’t want her dying for it. He Said he wanted to marry her, not mourn her. --- We reached town and found the women gathered with signs and songs, ready to march. Beau tried to stop Penelope. She told him she was ready to die for what she believed in. Then she turned to me and asked if I’d drive the wagon so they could make more noise. I agreed. Couldn’t say why. Maybe I respected her guts. People stared, some cheered, most mocked. The women kept singing. One fool shouted about how the Founding Fathers didn’t mean women. Ms. Calhoon stood her ground. Said the day had come for equality. That’s when Beau’s cousin Scott showed up and started yelling. Then I got Beau out of there before fists started flying. --- We rode off to an old battlefield. Quiet, empty, just ruins and ghosts maybe. Beau said nobody came there anymore. I told him he ought to leave while he still could. He said he wanted to, but had no money. He Said his family had it all, but kept him out of things because he had an “artistic temperament.” I joked that was a fancy excuse. He chuckled but said he really loved Penelope. I told him maybe he’d get to die for her too. He didn’t find that funny. I said I had to go. He did too. Said he was late and his uncle was a real piece of work. He handed me the rest of the payment and thanked me before hurrying off. Crazy day. But better than getting shot.
