I found this cute starfish crochet doily on Ravelry totally by chance. The pattern was published this month so I assume it’s new. The designer is called Sara Spring and it seems to be her first pattern on that platform. Although the pattern is free, you need to register to access it. You can find the pattern here.

I liked the pattern because the pdf gives you all the written instructions and at the end there's also a diagram. If you know how to follow crochet symbols, you don't need to even read the instructions which is exactly how I made this doily. I find this may be helpful for non-English speakers. You can follow this link if you’re not sure what I mean.

I bought the ball of thread from a charity shop ages ago so there was no label to say what type of thread it was. It just looked like the right thickness for my 1.5mm crochet hook.

The pattern gives you a sort of expected completion time of 50 minutes.

It actually took me much longer because I'm not used to handling such a fine crochet hook and thread and also I didn't follow the instructions fully.

I skipped one row because I didn't like how mine looked in comparison to the original. My modification didn't affect the final product though.

I've used my doily / coaster to rest my mug of coffee as you can see in the photo above. I've weighed the finished piece and it's 5g (only). I've also weighed the left-over thread and it weighs 20g so in theory I could make at least another three.
